TURKISH AIRLINES Get's A New Name: Türkiye Hava Yolları

Turkish Airlines

Turkish Airlines to be renamed:

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip want's to rename the airline with  Türkiye Hava Yolları as this is a plan of the country to be known as Türkiye. The carrier has been known as Türkiye Hava Yolları domestically since it had been formed in 1933.

The Turkish goverment owns 49% stake where as the 51% is publicly traded. Howeover the president said that the carrier will go under it's local name and they have plan to repaint all of their aircraft's, also the President said "We have taken a symbolic step by changing Turkey's name in the international sphere to 'Türkiye'. From now on the fuselage of our planes will be marked not as Turkish Airlines but as Türkiye Hava Yollari."

Turkish Airlines being repainted

Over 300 aircrafts to be repainted:

If  the carrier will be changing it's name across it's fleet, over 300 aircrafts would be needing a repaint. According to Plane Spotters the airline has 318 aircrafts with Airbus A321,A330, Boeing B777 and B737 making the majority of it's fleet.

Why the name change?

The Turkish government has recently pushed to have the country known as Türkiye, which authorities claim will help "preserve and glorify the culture and values of our nation." Only a few weeks ago, it applied to the United Nations (UN) to formally rename itself from Turkey to Türkiye, a request which UN accepted. Other organizations and politicians from other countries have adopted the new name and pronunciation this year, including NATO.

Some believe that Turkey's rebranding is to disassociate its name from the Turkey bird, although government officials claim it is about preserving its heritage. The word 'Hava Yolları' means is the Turkish term for Airlines, while the word 'Türkiye' is pronounced as tur-key-yay.

What do you think of Turkish Airlines' plan to rebrand itself as its local name? Let us know in the comments.
